Viorel Alexandru

Viorel Alexandru was born in Braila, Romania on 24/09/1959. His musical talent was discovered at a very early age and he was accepted into the Music Lyceum in Bucharest.

Aged seventeen he had already won prizes in various competitions. During his training period with I. Tetel, he played solo concerts with the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Radio Orchestra, Bucharest.

In 1980 the regime at that time allowed him to be brokered to the ‘Theater der Altmark’ in Stendal – back then still in East Germany – as a solo double bass player. In 1982 he managed to flee to West Berlin.

Before long he was employed as a double bass player with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and studied with Professor Rainer Zepperitz. During the following two and a half years he participated in all concerts of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, including tours, which took him to the Far East (Japan and Korea) and to various European countries.

Viorel Alexandru is Principal Double Bass Player in the Zurich Opera House Orchestra since 1985.
